Project Details

McCarthy Group was awarded the civil works package for Ingall Street in October 2019. We undertook the cut and fill bulk earthworks to allow for the construction of 26 residential units. The site was vacant and historically had been subjected to placement of uncontrolled fill which had the presence of anthropogenic materials, slag and waste products from the former BHP Steelworks.

Our roles included:

  • Supervision & management, survey, QA documentation, WHS compliance
  • Stripping of topsoil
  • Stripping of contaminated material from the southern section of the site and placing it in the lower fill area on the northern side
  • All potentially contaminated material was wrapped by a HIVIS geofabric marker layer
  • Placement of capping fill layer over the contaminated material
  • Hammering through 6000m3 of rock and processing it into suitable size for controlled fill
  • All fill works on site were supervised under Level 1 Geotech
  • Stormwater drainage works
  • Final trim of building pads subgrade level

This project was challenging in regard to managing contaminated material, the logistics of the site with tight access and being adjacent to a busy highway as well as challenging ground conditions. Despite these challenges, we managed to successfully deliver this project on time and on budget with zero LTIs.
